The Right is Rising – Regressive Transformation

Far-Right-Parties-2015 The world is going to shit and shit is moving closer to home.

An anti-fascist, anti-establishment institution that laid bare the ills, evils and warts in society gets attacked by a fascist group further strengthening the rise of fascists in Europe and beyond.

Opportunistic politicians from across the spectrum jump on the opportunity to make currency out of another atrocity, what Charlie Hebdo stands for finds itself under attack… again by monsters after the fact.

They are getting closer and closer…. fascists in all shapes and guises, in the name of God, colour, ethnicity, liberty, pushing fascist wares at us. Working hard to convince us to build walls and burn bridges for the sake of our own safety.

Tweet-Rupert-Murdoch-Controverisla_Rowling_is_just_one_of_many_celebrities_politician-a- Divisions and inequality are the seeds sowed by our ancestors whose bitter fruits we reap, we talk of an unwillingness to integrate, but what have we done to facilitate that journey for 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations of migrants who were shipped in for cheap labor and pushed to the fringes once they had served their purpose. Or for that matter the indigenous inhabitants who got marginalised by the arrival of the outsiders.

Our social framework is geared to consume and discard, it is broken.

Ghettos-and-Greed-Quote Be it Berlin, Bradford, Paris, Lille or London there exist ghettos of discontent and marginalisation, not limited to a single brand of God, ethnicity or colour. Breeding grounds for purveyors of darkness and monstrosity, again not limited to a single brand of God, ethnicity or colour.

Fascism in all its guises is on the rise, one feeding of another. Lets be careful of the narratives we buy into; those that break down the walls, uproot the inequality and divisions that risk setting us back a century, the darkness our ancestors fought against not too long ago.

Security of our homeland begins abroad

Across every forum I have had the opportunity to speak on this subject, be it the Agile Business Conference in London, Digibury in Cantebury, Palace of Westminster, numerous technology camps across Eurasia or Starbucks (the usual rendezvous for the curious) the message has always been …security of our homeland begins abroad. It was hence reassuring to hear our Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Mr Philip Hammond utter those exact words this week during the 10th Manama Dialogue Regional Security Summit organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in the Bahraini capital Manama.

However Mr Hammond’s vision for its implementation is a Universe apart from our own, though Mr Hammond has got it right that the security of the “homeland” began abroad his means to achieve it as history has repeatedly proven are going to be ineffective. To protect Britain and British interests our foreign policy needs to pivot away from building military bases and putting our troops on the ground to prop up unpopular regimes.

Transformation will happen Mr Hammond, choose wisely as to how you invest our taxes abroad. Be it the Middle East, North Africa, Sahel,  Afghanistan, Central or South Asia; every society is transforming from the bottom up and from the top down. The populous is seeking progressive change whilst the top is seeking ways to maintain the status quo, our foreign policy must embrace the transformation being driven from the bottom up for that is where the war for hearts and minds will be won or lost, that is where the 99% will see us as their friends or as the enemy that worked with their corrupt and oppressive regimes; prolonging the inevitable.

Middle Britain needs to think hard but not for too long. Do we want our taxes spent on the protection and preservation of unpopular regimes or do we want to contribute towards a future state where Britain is part of the solution and not the problem.

Security of the homeland will not come from the expansion of our military complex in distant lands, it will come from prosperity of the masses of those distant lands who remain disenfranchised.

Digitally lead, Agile designed, open sourced social transformation

Westminster University Business School Earlier this week I was back at Westminster University for their second project management conference,  reminiscing really… Agile was just an excuse! from 1994 to 1997 this place was home from home,  life long friends, heated debates in Farhang’s development classes to a whole lot more, any way the presentation from the day, slightly changed for Slideshare doesn’t handle animations as well as Keynote!

Hope you found the slides informative and do post your feedback, over Twitter is best I have closed of commenting for moderating comments is an overhead I can do without. I would like to thank Nicholas and Nadia from Westminster’s Business School for inviting me to share my experiences of applying Agile (Scrum and Kanban) in a non-tech social development project.

If you think you have benefited from what has been shared then #GiveBack; please do the absolute minimum and follow @Bringptp on twitter, like them on Facebook and share their videos from Vimeo, thats the least you could do… but if you like… don’t let me stop you there, you can donate here; 2015 is a big year for Bring Peace Through Prosperity they need to raise US $100,000- to work with another 500 entrepreneurs of circumstances and transform their communities and society.

Lastly I would like to thank @JA and Acquia for giving me time out to contribute.

Agile, cups of tea, business growth and Social Transformation

For the first timers a brief intro to Peace Through Prosperity (BringPTP). This is what BringPTP does:

Digitally Lead Social Transformation If you’d like to learn more about BringPTP you can visit their website, follow them on Twitter, Facebook  and subscribe to their Vimeo channel to keep their pulse.

Now that you know what BringPTP does we can get into business growth and social transformation being delivered using Agile and cups of tea or their lack of.

Whilst deliberating on which change to introduce first and likelihood of its acceptance the BringPTP team proposed a ‘three cups of tea policy to reduce incidental costs for street based micro-entrepreneurs. The policy is ‘I will only buy three cups of tea per day regardless of who consumes them’. The BringPTP team decided to run this as a micro fail experiment over a two week period and to A/B test it with different groups of micro-entrepreneurs in that period. Having collected the data the ‘3 cups of tea per day policy’ got extended across 7 neighborhoods and 210+ participants in the program. The micro-fail experiment paid off.

Participants of the program who embraced the ‘3 cups of tea rule’ have saved PKR 10,000 (US $97) to PKR 12,000  (US $116) over a 3 month period. Some of them have used these savings to expand their micro-enterprises and creating local employment… the footage from the 2nd group workshop focuses on the impact of this experiment, the approach is paying off, Agile has gone boundary less and has proven to be a key component in delivering real, lasting socioeconomic change.

Mohammad Zeeshan a vegetable seller from Hijrat Colony has expanded his customer base and is soon to launch a home delivery service, Zeeshan talks about marketing and service development! that’s a result! point being from his vocabulary to his worldview, everything has changed, for the better.

Rasool Khan a recent migrant from the North has doubled his daily revenue from PKR 300 (US $2.9) to PKR 700 (US $6.8) and has a powerful message for his peers.

Congratulations to the BringPTP team and a huge thank you to its supporters and ambassadors that include the Agile Community, the Drupal Community  and other pockets of awesome folks who do whatever they can to help BringPTP bring peace through prosperity.
